The 2nd Amendment is obsolete, if not a mistake in the first place (What is the American Revolution, anyway?). However, let’s leave it alone for now, or we may face another civil war (America: Guns vs. Slavery). Instead, reform our failing political system, as I have suggested (History 2.0 – China’s Comeback vs. America’s Decline)!
1. Gun violence in America
The image above is worth more than 1,000 words.
2. Endless debate on mass shootings
The image below summarizes it all.
At the center of the endless debate is the Second Amendment.
3. What is the 2nd Amendment?
Read Wikipedia – Second Amendment.
In short, the primary purpose of the 2nd Amendment is for Americans to protect themselves against tyrannies, domestic or foreign, not for hunting.
4. Discussion
Let’s examine the 2nd amendment from three major perspectives:
- A well-regulated militia.
- A government for the people.
- American culture.
Let me elaborate on each …
4.1 A well-regulated militia
Internationally, our military is by far the strongest. Therefore, it is fair to say that America is well protected against hostile foreign forces, especially militarily.
Domestically, because the military is a part of the government, can any American possibly defend himself (or herself) against a possible tyrannical government that has the strongest military on earth?
No, of course not.
What about the local police?
They have been militarized over the past few years.
In short, the argument for a “well-regulated militia” no longer has any valid meaning!
4.2 A government for the people
America was founded by/of/for the rich and remains so today (What is America, anyway?). As a result, some Americans still believe in the need of arming themselves against a possible tyrannical government.
What should America do?
Political reforms, as I have suggested (History 2.0 – China’s Comeback vs. America’s Decline)!
Specifically, let’s focus on building a government that is truly for the people, like China has been over the past 2,000 years, at least. For more, read What is China, anyway?
4.3 American culture
Guns to America is what bread and butter to mankind. Two informative readings:
Given the two facts below, Americans should own guns for self-protection, at least:
- There are some 300 million guns out there in America.
- America has all kinds of crimes.
5. More discussion
Nothing is cast in stone, including the U.S. Constitution, which can be changed via Amendments.
Nor is the 2nd Amendment cast in stone!
Practically, let’s leave the 2nd Amendment alone for now. Two main reasons:
- The problem is not bad enough to warrant any attempt of changing it, which may result in another civil war. For more, read America: Guns vs. Slavery.
- We must reform our political system, as I have suggested (History 2.0 – China’s Comeback vs. America’s Decline), which is far more fundamental, urgent, and holistic.
6. Closing
Once again, leave the 2nd Amendment alone for now, and focus on political reforms, as I have suggested (History 2.0 – China’s Comeback vs. America’s Decline)!
Youtube , Chinese, (IISS) June 12, 2022 has made their COMMITMENTS TO THE WORLD in this meeting in Singapore. Creating a hostile statement in writing toward the United States Government, could be viewed as Treason as a US Citizen. Free Speech doesn’t follow the guidelines of provoking statements that may lead to a change in our Constitution. The China Conference made that a reference also to their Communist Constitution. Someone illustrating such writings in the Chinese language to make changes or rewriting anything in their Constitution would be imprisoned.
