What is colonialism, anyway?

In this post, I will first clearly spell out what colonialism is. I will then call the world to succinctly (1) recognize America as the last big colonial power standing and (2) work toward a peaceful ending of colonial America (1776-2030), thus wiping out colonialism from this planet!

1. What is colonialism?

Below is an excerpt from Wikipedia – Colonialism.

Though colonialism has existed since ancient times, the concept is most strongly associated with the European colonial period starting with the 15th century when some European states established colonising empires.

In the aftermath of World War II colonial powers retreated between 1945 and 1975; over which time nearly all colonies gained independence,

In summary:

  • Colonialism started after 1492, when Christopher Columbus discovered the “new” world.
  • The end of WWII was the beginning of the end of colonialism.

2. What has colonialism done to the world?

With guns in one hand and the Bible in the other, the West (e.g., Spain and Britain) colonized not only the “new” world, but also almost entirely the rest of the old world, including China (and India). For an overview of 500 years of European colonialism, watch the video at the end of this post.

As a result, the West became exceptionally rich, while the rest of the world became exceptionally poor.

Take China as an example: China (together with India) had the largest economy in the world for most of the first 18 centuries of our 2-millennium-old calendar. Despite the Western expansion after 1492, by 1820, China’s world share of GDP was still, according to Dambisa Moyo (How the west was lost), at an impressive 32.2%, while America’s was a paltry 1.8% and Europe’s was 26.6%. However, after 1820, it was all hell for China. According to Moyo:

  • By 1890, China’s world share of GDP was down to 13.8%, while America’s was up to 13.8% and Europe’s was up to 40%.
  • By 1952, China fell to 5.2%, while America and Europe were 30% each.

In short, by the mid-1800s, the world became totally distorted! This total distortion has resulted in two monstrous falsehoods …

3. Two monstrous falsehoods of colonialism

  • America is an exceptional country, featuring, among other things, two “new” notions: freedom and self-governing. Neither was really new, as both predate the notion of a nation-state formed quite a few thousand years ago.
  • Democracy is a, if not the only, valid form of government. The simple truth is modern Western [liberal] democracy is a lie largely built on top of colonialism and imperialism, without which it has failed everywhere else (e.g., Egypt and Iraq), without exception!

Both falsehoods were hugely exposed in March 2003, when the U.S. launched the Iraq War.

4. America is the last big colonial power standing!

The launch of the Iraq War revealed not only the two falsehoods, but also the true color of America: America is actually the last big colonial power standing!

5. Why is colonialism finally ending?

China’s comeback!

Over the past four decades, China has lifted some 800 million people out of poverty, without dropping a single bomb. This is totally unprecedented in human history, especially in terms of scale, speed, and peaceful development!

In other words, China has offered to the world a real, and significant, model of prosperity, without colonialism!

For more, read China’s state capitalism = communism + capitalism.

6. Will colonialism end peacefully?

Colonialism is finally ending (1492-2030) with America, being the last big colonial power, collapsing.

America may choose to end it peacefully or take the world down with it via a nuclear war, thus destroying us all as a species!

America, reform our failing political system, as I have suggested (History 2.0 – China’s Comeback vs. America’s Decline), or become a fiddle, second to China!

7. Closing

It’s time for the world to clearly recognize America as the last big colonial power standing and work toward a peaceful ending of colonial America (1776-2030), thus wiping out colonialism from his planet!
